This conference is designed to inform and connect those supporting children, youth and adults living with FASD. Kim Barthel, BMR, OTR is an author, consultant, occupational therapist, and owner of Labyrinth Journeys, a company dedicated to providing professional and personal growth workshops. Kim is a Neuro-Developmental Treatment-OT Instructor and a teacher of Sensory Integration Therapy, with post-graduate study in neuro-sciences and a range of complementary healing practices. Kim’s recent professional challenges include creating sustainable care strategies in a wide variety of cultures throughout the world. Kim currently lives in Victoria, BC with her husband and fifteen year old daughter.

Susan Opie, BA, MSW, RSW currently works as a part-time therapist and clinical supervisor with the Specialized Individual Placement Program at Macdonald Youth Services, and part-time as a social worker for the Manitoba FASD Centre in Winnipeg. Prior to that she worked for the Interagency FASD Program in Winnipeg providing family focussed early intervention services for children with FASD for 8 years, was involved in the start up phase of the Manitoba Youth Centre’s FASD Project and has run support groups for families dealing with FASD in Winnipeg. Susan did her MSW work focusing on modifying family therapy models toaccommodate issues related to FASD. She has done numerous workshops and presented at conferences through western and northern Canada.

Deborah Rutman, PhD. Since 1994, Deborah has undertaken research exploring the strengths, challenges and experiences of youth, adults, women, and families living with FASD, in order to identify supportive policies, programs and practices. Recent projects focus on: promising approaches in working with women with FASD; parenting with FASD; and the legal system’s criminalization of disability. Deborah is an Adjunct Associate Professor and Senior Research Associate with the School of Social Work at the University of Victoria, and is a member of the Canada Northwest FASD Research Network. As a consultant, Deborah has undertaken a number of evaluations of support programs for young people, women and families affected by FASD.
